Ricky Gervais is also now part of the E4 team, script-editing PhoneShop, a new comedy that debuted on Channel 4's Comedy Showcase last month featuring the strange subculture that exists among self-confident youths who sell us our tools of mobile communication.

"Everyone's got a mobile phone and has had some encounter in a phone shop. It's also about those difficult dead-end jobs everyone has had at least once in their lives," says Jain, pictured right. She was so impressed with the pilot for PhoneShop, created by Phil Bowker of Talkback Thames, that she has commissioned a six-part series for next year.

E4 has ordered a full series of PhoneShop, on the strength of a pilot that airs tonight.

Ricky Gervais acted as script editor for the series, set in a mobile phone store and created by Phil Bowker, head of comedy at production house Talkback Thames.

Head of E4 Angela Jain said: ‘I absolutely loved the pilot of PhoneShop when I first saw it. I laughed out loud so I am delighted to have a full series in the pipeline for E4.

‘Everyone has a mobile phone these days - and most of us have worked in shops trying to sell stuff so it's rich pickings in comedy terms.’

This pilot has already been picked up for a full series, and it’s easy to see why – it’s hilarious. Apparently Ricky Gervais was the script editor and you can certainly see his influence/why he was chosen (I don’t quite know what the script editor does). Unsurprisingly, it’s about the goings on in a mobile phone shop, and this episode followed a new sales person’s first day in the job. It doesn’t sound promising, but then, a day in the life of a Slough paper merchants doesn’t sound that exciting either. My favourite lines came from a montage of the sales team in action: ’I think if Jade was still with us, this is the phone she would have chosen.’ and ‘Let’s talk about what insurance package that Jay Z might have with this phone.’

I’m looking forward to the full series.

PhoneShop has an entry on the British Comedy Guide

On High Street UK the priority is to 'shift units, make money, smash targets...' and no one knows that better than the staff of PhoneShop. New recruit Christopher is on the infamous one day trial, but will he make his first sale by 6pm and secure the job, or will he be yet another victim of the vicious 'retail battlefield'?

PhoneShop centres on the everyday lives of the employees of the mobile phone shop, the like of which you can find in every high street and shopping mall across the country. In this pilot episode, Christopher, the 'new man', is charged with replacing super salesman 'Little' Gary Patel (who has been arrested (again) for attacking the lads from Top Shop). Christopher, a graduate, needs to quickly adapt to this new world where street smart is the order of the day and degrees count for nothing. Will he survive the dreaded one-day trial? And if he does will he fit in with the rest of the team?

Our Review: The pilot of this episode was so highly regarded internally within Channel 4 that they ordered a full six-part series of the show before the pilot had even aired.

Anyone who has worked in a phone shop will certainly identify with this comedy - the writers have clearly done their research on clueless customers and the tricks that sales people will use to get them to upgrade.

Channel 4 have commissioned a sitcom pilot "Phone Shop" that has been shooting in Sutton High Street.

Filming for a week in July, the production took over the old Sussex bookshop installing a full retail set and made use of the Ivory Lounge and the High Street itself for additional scenes.

PhoneShop centres on the everyday lives of the employees of a mobile phone shop. The Channel 4 pilot will be broadcast in Nov and we're all hopeful it gets picked up for a full 6 episode series which could see the team returning to Sutton High Street for six weeks.

Phone Shop doesn't link no Build-A-Bear Workshop chicks.

The action is set in a phone store at a shopping mall where graduate Christopher (Tom Bennett) needs to prove himself worthy of a job by selling a cell phone before the shop closes for the day.

"PhoneShop," to air in the U.K. on Channel 4, has been created, written and produced by Phil Bowker and supervised by Gervais. Bowker, head of comedy at U.K. shingle Talkback Thames, gave Gervais his first job on TV a decade ago.

Eight years after The Office was first screened Gervais has put his name to the Channel 4 show, which aired for the first time on Thursday night as part of the broadcaster's experimental Comedy Showcase strand.

It is understood that the pilot show was so well thought of that E4 has already commissioned a full six-part series for 2010 before viewers have had a chance to pass judgement.

The comedy has been heavily researched to capture the intensely competitive world of selling phones. Co-writer Jon MacQueen was despatched to the high street and discovered how phone shop boys dreamed of girls from Zara but were sometimes prepared to "go academy" with a rising star from Claire's Accessories.

He learned how they fight over the right to control the shop's music and lock up the window shutter at the end of the day. "We've all been in these shops and you feel mugged when you come out with a phone you didn't want," says Bowker. "But they earn £9,000 a year and the rest is commission – they need to stitch you up."

The programme premiered last night on Channel 4 as part of its experimental comedy strand, and the Independent reports the channel is such a fan of the show that it's already been commissioned for a six-part series in 2010.

PhoneShop is a comedy Glengarry Glen Ross set on the high street, with Tom Bennett off of Pulling playing a new salesperson who has to figure out how to flog the latest kit to the punters.
